The thing with biopic films is that they always work. Not only male-inspired Bollywood biopics like ‘M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story’ but Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi’ also smashed records at the Box Office.
From businessmen to freedom fighters, policemen to astronauts Bollywood has always a had a mix of great stories filmed as biopics. Likewise, the year 2020 will see a rise in number of female biopics of extraordinary people.
The year 2020 belongs to women. There are a number of female-centric biopics releasing in 2020 that will leave you asking for more. Yes, the year will kickstart with Deepika Padukone’s ‘Chhapaak’, a story based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Aggarwal.
Soon films like ‘Gunjan Saxena: Kargil Girl’, ‘Thalaivi’ and ‘Saina’. The current trend shows that Bollywood is finally opening up to and recognizing the efforts of women achievers from the past.
Being a movie buff, here are the most epic female-centri biopics that we cannot wait to watch in cinemas in 2020.
Chhapaak
Directed by Meghna Gulzar, Chhapaak is based on the life of acid attack survivor Lakshmi Agarwal. Chhapaak will also make Deepika’s debut as a producer.
The film will see ace actress Deepika Padukone essay the role of Laxmi Aggarwal, the brave soul who recovered and revamped her life after the traumatic tragedy. Meghna claims to have portrayed Deepika in a never-seen-before avatar where she has a different body language going on.
The film will the theatres on 10 January 2020. The film come to blows with Ajay Devgn’s ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’. The film is based on the life of Tanaji Malusre, a subedar in the army of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The film will also see Kajol in the lead role.

Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl
The film will see newbie Jahanvi Kapoor essaying the role of brave Gunjan Saxena who made sure her presence was felt during the tough times of Kargil War. IAF Pilot Gunjan Saxena made history when she flew into a combat zone during the Kargil War and evacuated injured soldiers from Kargil in 1999. Despite suffering from fire burns, she continued with the rescue mission with lieutenant Srividya Rajan. She was awarded with the Shaurya Chakra for her acts of bravery.
The film is being helmed by Karan Johar, produced by Dharma Productions and also stars Pankaj Tripathi and Angad Bedi in lead roles. ‘Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl’, an inspiring story of a fearless woman will hit the theatre screens on 13 March 2020.

Thalaivi
Kangana Ranaut is on a roll these days. The actress slayed as Rani Jhansi in ‘Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi’ in 2019 and she plans to continue the same in 2020. She will be seen in ‘Thalaivi’ in June 2020. The film is based on the life story of the most memorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J Jayalalithaa. As per the recently released trailer, the actress will be donning 4 different looks to portray Jayalalithaa’s growing ad ageing process as she graduated from an actress to the respected Chief Minister.
The first look of the film shows supremely talented Kangana wearing a lot of makeup and prosthetics to nail Jayalalithaa’s look for the film. The teaser and first look have already received a lot of love and appreciation. The biographical film is directed by A. L. Vijay and stars Arvind Swami in the role of M. G. Ramachandran. The film will release in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi on 26 June 2020.

Saina
Directed by Amol Gupte under Gulshan Kumar’s banner T-Series, ‘Saina’ is the life-story of ace badminton player Saina Nehwal. Actress Parineeti Chopra is prepping hard for her role of Saina Nehwal in the biopic film. The film will also star Manav Kaul as Nehwal’s coach Pullela Gopichand. Parineeti frequently shares her pictures and videos from the sets where she is seen sweating it out in order to perfect her role.
The Nehwal biopic release date hasn’t been announced yet but it will surely be a successful venture for the team.

Gangubai Kothewali
You have to give to Alia Bhatt for making the boldest career choices right at the start of her Bollywood journey. Not that we’re complaining but her interesting choice of roles in ‘Highway’, ‘Raazi’, ‘Kalank’ and now ‘Gangubai Kothewali’ has proven that is she a star in the making. Ace director Sanjay Leela Bhansali announced his latest film ‘Gangubai Kothewali’ based on the life of the madam of Kamathipura brothels in Mumbai during the 60s. Forced into prostitution at a young age, Gangubai didn’t let the tough circumstances brake her will. She went onto become the biggest support for women who were forced into prostitution.
The release date hasn’t been announced yet but it will be a delight to see Alia Bhatt kill it as Gangubai Kothewali on the silver screen.
Dhaakad
Fierce Kangana will be seen as a raging actioner in ‘Dhaakad’ scheduled to release on Diwali 2020. The first poster of the film features Kangana Ranaut holding some big guns with the angry look on her face. Touted to be an action entertainer, the film will be directed by Razneesh Ghai. The shooting schedule featuring some high-octane action sequences wit real guns and machinery will start from February 2020.
Yet again, ferocious Kangana Ranaut will take the centre stage with another female-centric movie added to her kitty after ‘Queen’, ‘Manikarnika’ and ‘Thalaivi’.
Shakuntala Devi
Directed and written by Anu Menon, Shakuntala Devi is the story of a human-computer in short hair and red saree. Shakuntala Devi is known for her extraordinary mathematical skills which brought her national fame. Her prowess was first noticed when she solved a maths problem meant for 18-year-olds at the age of 5. Shakuntala Devi was an astrologer, cookbook author and a novelist. She travelled the world talking about her mathematical ideas in colleges, theatres, radio and even television. She also authored the book The World Of Homosexuals.
The film is being helmed by Sony Pictures Entertainment Network stars Vidya Balan in the lead role. The film will release in cinemas in summer 2020.
While most films are still in production, we can’t be more excited to see our reigning Bollywood queens kill it at the Box Office in 2020. The fans are already hyping up their favorite heroines on Twitter.
