The Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi was established in 1919 and is given the status of an Institute of National Importance. It is a public technical university and was earlier known as the Banaras Engineering College, which was changed into IT BHU in 1968 and finally to IIT (BHU) in 2012.
