Course Details

The full form of MBBS is Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. MBBS is an undergraduate degree program. This course is basically for students who want to become a doctor.

The duration of MBBS programs is for 5 years and 6 months, which includes 1 year of internship which can be on a rotational basis at hospitals, health centres, and health camps organized by non-profit organizations (NGOs).

The average fees of the MBBS course depend on whether the aspirant qualifies and chooses a Government Medical College or a Private Medical College. Fees for government colleges are comparatively low than that of private colleges. To give you an idea, the fees on average range from Rs. 90,000 to 30,00,000/-

MBBS is the basic or degree level course after 12th for the medical profession. The candidates who completed the degree of MBBS are referred to by the title of “Doctor” and use the prefix “Dr”.

MBBS Syllabus

The MBBS course structure is divided into 9 semesters and the syllabus of the MBBS course is designated in such a way that MBBS degree holders can choose a specialization for further majoring and practicing medicine.

Whereas, for specialization, from a career point of view the MBBS students can opt from Cardiology, Anesthesiology, Nephrology, Organ Transplant, Endocrine, Gynecology and General Surgery, etc.

Entrance Exams

Students who aspire to pursue MBBS in 2023 must start preparing during their 12th or after 12th class for the below mentioned competitive entrance examinations:

  • National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET),
  • All India Institute of Medical Sciences for MBBS (AIIMS MBBS) and,
  • Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER MBBS) entrance exams.

Initially, there were two other major entrance tests for admission to MBBS courses in India: the JIPMER MBBS Exam and the AIIMS MBBS Exam. However, these examinations were completely cancelled by the council in 2019 and making NEET the most important medical entrance test in India.

Therefore, to get admitted to the MBBS program, a student needs to appear for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Now, the NEET exam is the only entrance test for admission to MBBS courses and is accepted by both government and private institutions.

We would like to mention that the NEET exam is undertaken by almost every MBBS aspirant to enrol in an MBBS course in India. This important medical entrance examination is conducted across 154 test centres in India.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates should have cleared their 10+2 exam and must secure a minimum of 50% marks for the General category and 40% for reserved category students with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Zoology & Botany).
  • Students must be of Indian Nationality for admission through the All India Entrance Exam (NEET).
  • The age of the student should be 17+ as of 31st December of the year of admission.

Moreover, the candidates also must have studied English as the main subject for their qualifying examination.

General Physician

General Physicians check and test their patients as they are highly trained specialists who provide a range of non-surgical health care to adult patients. They also check the medical history of their patients, prescribe medications, and suggest medical tests until these problems have been resolved or stabilized.

Medical Officer

Medical Officers offer medical support and advice to their patients they spot problems and after a proper checkup gives recommendations on health issues and disease control.

Salary Offered: Upto INR 7 Lakhs per annum

Surgeon

Surgeons are medical professionals who are responsible for carrying out surgeries on patients. Usually, Surgeons are the ones who have done their specializations in a specific area of medical science.

Salary Offered: Upto INR 10 Lakhs per annum

Paediatrician

A Pediatrician is a medical practitioner is the one who treats the illness in children and examines their general growth and development.

Salary Offered: Upto INR 5.4- 7 Lakhs per annum

Dietician

The profession of a Dietician is quite good and interesting. However, their work is to generally share knowledge about healthy diets as well as to promote nutrition among the patients or the general public and prepare healthy diet plans for them.

Medical Assistant (Surgery)

Medical assistants (surgery), usually understand the medical condition of their patients, diagnose them, and treat them using modern surgical techniques.

Salary Offered: INR 6 – 8 Lakhs per annum
