The National Institute of Technology Karnataka, or NITK Surathkal, is a public technical university established in 1960 as Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC) at Surathkal, Mangaluru, Karnataka. It was given the status of the National Institute of Technology in 2002 and has been recognised as the Institute of National Importance. It ranks 38th overall and 12th for engineering in NIRF 2023.

The institute offers more than 40 courses at the UG, PG, and PhD levels in the fields of engineering, management, and science. The institute is best known for its flagship course, B.Tech. Admission to NITK Surathkal is based on national and state-level entrance exams.

The institute comprises 13 departments, a school, and 10 supporting centres. NITK is recognised by AICTE and UGC and is accredited by the NBA. The placement rate of NITK for the year 2022 was 83%, and the highest package offered in B.Tech was INR 45.03 LPA.

The institute offers B.Tech. at the undergraduate level, M.A., M.Sc., M.Tech., and M.B.A. at the postgraduate level, and doctoral programmes. Admissions into these programmes are purely done through entrance examinations, followed by counselling.

Entrance Exam 

The institute makes clear provision for admission in any course through merit in entrance exams at the national or state level. No direct admission on any ground is permitted to a student. Here is the list of courses and the entrance exam a student needs to qualify for NITK:

Cut-off 

A cutoff is the minimum rank that a student must hold to be able to be admitted to NITK Surathkal. JoSAA announces this cutoff for B.Tech. courses. The cutoff for M.Tech. is done by CCMT, and for all other programmes, it is based on their performance in the entrance exam.

The cutoff is decided on the basis of the number of applicants, availability of seats, difficulty level of the paper, etc. A candidate also needs to hold a minimum percentage or mark in the 12th or equivalent exam or UG exam. Candidates can refer to the 2022 cutoff in the table given below:

NITK Surathkal is an autonomous body that has been recognised by AICTE and UGC. The Institute of National Importance has also been accredited by the NBA. NIRF 2023 has ranked it 38th overall and 12th for engineering. QS World University has ranked it 401–450 in the Asian University Rankings 2023.

The institute is also labelled a “Band A’ institution (ranking between 11 and 25) in the ARIIA 2020 rankings. The institute has signed MOUs with other NITs, GEC Thrissur and GCT Coimbatore, for research projects and other works.

The NITK Surathkal campus is spread over an area of 295.35 acres and is situated near the coastal belt of Karnataka. The institute is at a distance of 22 km from Mangalore. The university is well connected to the outside world as it is located on National Highway 66.

How to Apply for NITK Surathkal 2023?

Admission to B.Tech courses at NITK is done on the basis of the rank of JEE Main and JOSAA counselling. Candidates must qualify to apply at NITK Surathkal for the course of their choice. Candidates can refer to the process below for admission at NITK for the B.Tech course:

• You must register for JEE Mains online through the official website of the NTA.
• Appear and qualify in the JEE Mains examination.
• After clearing the JEE Mains exam, a candidate needs to appear for JOSAA counselling.
• For JOSAA registration, enter your JEE Mains application number and password.
• You are now required to check all of the details and update the password.
• Participate in the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling session and in NITK Surathkal as your preferred college, along with the course you wish to be admitted to.
• If you have the required rank or cutoff set for NITK, you will be admitted to the course of your choice.

NITK Surathkal Placement

The NITK Surathkal campus placement drive recorded a placement rate of 86.1%. A total of 1385 students were placed out of 1,608 eligible students, with the highest package being INR 45.03 LPA and the average package being INR 23.03 LPA for BTech (IT) in 2022.
