1770 is an upcoming multilingual period drama film which is helmed by the legendary South Indian director S.S. Rajamouli’s protege Ashwin Gangaraju, who assisted him in blockbuster films Eega and Baahubali film series.
This much-anticipated film is inspired by the great Indian poet, novelist and journalist of the 19th century, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s 1882 Bengali Novel Anandmath, which is one of the landmarks of Modern Bengali and Indian literature.
1770 Movie Announcement
On August 17, 2022, right after India celebrated Azaadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the 75 years of its Independence from the British rule, this historic drama film, featuring India’s freedom struggle was announced by its makers.

The film was announced via an animated motion poster referring to Indian monks’ fight for freedom against the cruel British regime. The poster also reads “Celebrating 150 years of Vande Mataram”, India’s National song written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee for his novel Anandmath. This year marks the 150th anniversary of both the novel and the song.

1770 Cast & Crew
Author and filmmaker Ram Kamal Mukherjee is the creator of the film. Its’ adapted story and screenplay is written by V. Vijayendra Prasad, one of the top Indian screenwriters of the present times, who also went on to write Rajamouli’s superhit films RRR and Baahubali film series.
The film is produced by Shhailendra Kkumar and Suraj Sharma whereas Sujoyy Kuttiy and Krishna Kumar B. are serving as the co-producer and executive producer of the film, respectively.
Talking about the star cast of the film, it is yet to be finalized. Reportedly, the team will lock the main lead cast before Dussehra and will announce the cast by Diwali this year.
1770 Release Date
The big ticket movie is under pre-production work, and as soon as the cast is finalized, the team will start shooting. The multilingual film will be released on a large scale in multiple Indian languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Bengali. The official release date is yet to be announced by the makers.
About the Film
The film is based on the 1770’s Sanyasi Rebellion and will focus on the armed struggle by Sadhus (monks) against the British East India Company. When various kingdoms in the country were disintegrating and kings were abdicating their thrones out of fear of consequences, it was the tenacious armed revolution headed by Sanyasis who fought the invaders as long as they could.
