The Superme court of India held a verdict on monday that the Union Government of India is bound to not extend Abu Salem’s jail term beyond 25 years and he should be released after completion of his term in the wake of Solemn assurance to the Government of Portugal in December, 2002.
Who is Abu Salem?
Abu Salem Abdul Qayoom Ansari popularly known as Abu Salem was originally from Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. Before joining the underworld he had tried his luck in different labours.
Cases on Abu Salem
Abu Salem was one of the main plotters of 1993 Mumbai blasts in which 257 people lost their lives, more than 700 people got injured and properties worth in crores got damaged. On 12 March 1993 a total of 13 blasts happened in Mumbai and Abu Salem was one of the main conspirators.
He was also involved in several murder cases, extortion cases and he was also involved with the gang of Dawood Ibrahim (who is a convict of 26/11 bomb blasts in Mumbai).
Abu Salem used to work as a driver for Dawood Ibrahim and he used to transport weapons.
Bollywood Connection of Abu Salem
Abu Salem used to do Mafia financing in Bollywood films and in an Police interrogation he confessed that he transported many consignments of weapons to Actor Sanjay Dutt.
According to some media reports he was the main mastermind behind the murder of famous music producer and former cheif of T-series Gulshan Kumar.
And he also murdered the secretary of Nepalese Bollywood actress, Manisha Koirala.

She confessed when she was under arrest in Portugal and when she read the chargesheet then she realised why Abu Salem was hiding from one place to another and what serious offences he had committed.

Recent update on this case
Abu Salem is currently in Jail and a bench of Justices SK Kaul and MM Suderesh on Monday said that under article 72 of the Indian Constitution, the President of India can grant pardons, etc, and to suspend, remit, or commute sentences in certain cases and Union government should not extend the jail term of Abu Salem.
