One of the most-awaited films “Avatar: The Way of Water” or “Avatar 2” will grace cinemas worldwide in mid-Dec. The epic sci-fi is no doubt carrying a massive buzz surrounding it. It is a sequel to the highest-grossing film of all-time Avatar (2009).

The expectations are no less from Avatar 2, there is a huge excitement regarding the movie in India as well. It will be released in all six languages English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. It has a runtime of 3hrs 10mins or 190 minutes.

Avatar 2 Budget and Advance Bookings

There is a huge curiosity among fans about the James Cameron outing. On the online ticket bookings site Bookmyshow, over 3.27L people have shown interest to watch the film what is surprising is that it is still around half a month to go for the film to hit the screens.

It is made on a budget of $250M (INR 2067 crores approx), and the advance bookings for the same were opened at premium formats from Nov 22, onwards in India in limited theatres.

Trade analyst, Taran Adarsh informed that the film will be screened round the clock in select theatres, and the first show will start as early as 12 AM. Along with this, the new trailer of the movie had also been dropped.

Avatar 2 has sold 37000 tickets in all properties worth 2 crores approx which includes English 3D format (19K tickets), English IMAX 3D format (8,100 tickets), 4DX format (2,900 tickets), and Hindi 3D (5,300 tickets). And these numbers are just from the premium formats, the full-fledged bookings are yet to open.

What is the Break Even for Avatar 2?

Well, when asked about the same filmmaker James Cameron recently said that Avatar 2 needs to become 4th or 5th highest-grosser of all time to break even. The top 3 films are Avatar ($2.9B), Avengers: Endgame ($2.7B), and Titanic ($2.1B) unadjusted for inflation.

On the subsequent spots are Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.07B) and Avengers: Infinity War ($2.05B). Therefore, as per Cameron, the sequel needs to amass at least $2B to break even. Surprising! isn’t it? that means the budget is more than the reported budget, however, makers haven’t given a hard number yet.

Avatar 2 gets Chinese release

Now, this is great news for Avatar’s biz, as the sequel to Avatar has been cleared to release in China. With this, it is all set to take a humungous start at the box office or could emerge as an all-time biggest opener. It will be released in China on Dec 16 same date as other territories including North America.

Avatar 2 Screen Counts & Buzz

Avatar was re-released in Sept to create anticipation among the cinephiles, from India it grossed over 6 crores on its opening weekend taking the total Avatar bizz in the vicinity of 110 crores.

As we know south India is a major market for Hollywood releases in India, recent reports suggest, astronomical figures are being quoted for the film. As per the sources, many top Telugu distributors are quoting 100-150 crores to release the film in two Telugu states.

It is an event film and is expected to occupy more than 3000 screens in India. Previous Hollywood event movies like Doctor Strange 2, and Thor:4 were released on over 2500 screens, here.

Box Office Collection

May 2022 release movie Doctor Strange 2 had taken the 4th highest all-time start in India for a Hollywood film. And now going by the buzz surrounding Avatar 2 among the Indian audience, James Cameron’s film will be a strong contender in the list of Top opening-day grosser films of all time. However, it is remained to be seen whether it will enter the Top-5 Hollywood opening in India or not.
