In January 2022 Netflix had completed 15 years since the beginning of Netflix’s streaming service. The world wasn’t prepared for what streaming television meant back then.

Despite the fact that millions of Indians still lack access to broadband internet, everyone is aware of what the term “Netflix & Chill” signifies.

The popularity of the shows in India is largely due to the fact that they mostly present stories that are more closely related to the lives of the people and enduring social issues and even if these are not the case, the uniqueness of its content grabs everyone’s attention.

Netflix provides an ideal window for people who want to enjoy the content of every kind. Here we have compiled Netflix’s top 10 most watched web series in India.

1- Squid Game

It is a Korean series based on Squid, which is a popular Children’s game in South Korea. The plot of the series revolves around Seong Gi-hun, a divorced father and debt-ridden gambler who lives with his sick mother, accepts the invitation to play the deadly games which comes as an opportunity to win a sizable cash reward.

After accepting the deal, he is brought to an unknown location where he meets 455 other players who are all experiencing severe financial difficulties.

The  series features Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Anupam Tripathi, HoYeon Jung, O Yeong-su, Wi Ha-joon, Heo Sung-tae and Kim Joo-ryoung. In June 2022, Netflix announced the renewal of the show for the second season which is likely to be broadcast by late 2023 or early 2024.

2- Sacred Games

Directed by ace-director Anurag Kashyap, along with Vikramaditya Motwane and Neeraj Gharwan, sacred games is a superhit Neo-noir crime thriller based on Vikram Chadra’s 2006 novel of the same name.

The series explores a battle between a “nobody” Sartaj Singh (played by Saif Ali Khan) and a merciless thug Ganesh Gaitonde (played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui) who believes in himself and considers himself no less than god.

The series premiered its first season on July 6 2018 and became the only Indian series to appear on The New York Times “The 30 Best International TV Shows of the Decade” list. Its second season premiered on August 15, 2019.

3- Money Heist

Created by Alex Pina, Money Heist is a Spanish heist crime drama series which delivered its first season on May 2, 2017 and till now it has delivered 3 successful seasons consisting a total of 41 episodes.

The series starring Pedro Alonso, Úrsula Corberó, Álvaro Morte, Itziar Ituño,  Enrique Arce, Jaime Lorente, Paco Tous,Alba Flores was a sleeper hit and won several awards including International Emmy Award for Best Drama series at the 46th International Emmy Awards.

It became one of the most-watched Netflix series, its Italian anti- fascist song “Bella ciao” became a summer hit across Europe in 2018.

4- Kota Factory

Created by Arunabh Kumar, Saurabh Khanna and Raghav Subbu, Kota factory is a youth based Hind web-show series features Mayur More, Ranjan Raj, Alam Khan, Jitendra Kumar,  Ahsaas Channa, Revathi Pillai, Urvi Singh in the lead roles.

The first season of the show premiered on YouTube and TVFPlay, however, the second season premiered on Netflix on September 26, 2021.

The show centers around 16-year-old Vaibhav (Mayur More), who relocates to Kota, a city in Rajasthan known for its coaching facilities, in order to compete for a spot at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) by cracking the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

5- House of Secrets: The Burari Deaths

Created by Leena Yadav and Anubhav Chopra, the 3 part docu-series explores the theories surrounding the shocking deaths of 11 members (7 females and 4 males) of the same family in Burari, Delhi, premiered on Netflix on June 30, 2018.

House of Secrets: The Burari Deaths documentary series  features Anita Anand, popular Indian journalist Barkha Dutt, Manoj Kumar, Naresh Bhatia, Mukesh Sengar and Brajesh Kumar.

6- Stranger Things

Created by The Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things is an American science fiction horror drama series that stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Noah Schnapp, Gaten Matarazzo, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton and others.

Its debut season premiered in July 2016 following the second, third and fourth seasons in October 2017, July 2019, and May and July 2022, respectively.

It follows numerous supernatural events that occur in a fictional town of Hawkins, especially their connection to a hostile alternate reality called the “Upside Down”, after a link between it and Earth is made by a government child experimentation facility.

7- You

Developed by Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble, You is an American psychological thriller based on the books by Caroline Kepnes. The series delivered its first season in September 2018 on Lifetime.

After that the series moved to Netflix and the platform released the second season in December 2019 and the third season on October 15, 2021. Ahead of the premiere of its third season, the series was already renewed for its fourth season.

The series’ main character is Joe Golberg (played by Penn Badgley) who is a bookstore manager as well as a serial killer who falls in love and develops extreme obsessions.

8- Jamtara- Sabka Number Ayega

The series which stars Amit Sial, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Aksha Pardasany, Aasif Khan, Anshumaan Pushkar, Sparsh Shrivastav and Monika Panwar premiered on January 10, 2022 on Netflix. It is created and directed by Soumendra Padhi and written by Trishant Srivastava.

The plot of the series centers around a group of young guns of a small-town who operate a successful phishing racket. However, they come across a dishonest politician who wants a share of their business. Finally, a recently appointed police superintendent comes into scene and  fights all of them.

9- All of Us Are Dead

All of Us Are Dead is S0uth Korean coming-of-age zombie apocalypse horror series which premiered its all 12 episodes on January 28, 2022 on Netflix. In June this year, it was renewed for the second season.

The series features Park Ji-Hu, Yoon Chang-young, Cho Yi-hyun, Lomon, You In-soon, Lee Yoo-mi, Kim Byung-chul, Lee Kyu-hyung and Jeon Bae-soo.

It follows a group of teenagers who get stuck after a zombie virus breaks out in a South Korean high school and now they have to defend their own selves by whatever is available in school as there is no chance of help from the government.

10- Lucifer

Developed by Tom Kapinos, Lucifer is an American urban fantasy television series which is based on DC Comics character “Lucifer Samael Morningstar” created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg.

It stars Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar alongside actors Lauren German, Kevin Alejandro, D.B. Woodside, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Scarlett Estevez, Rachael Harris, Kevin Rankin, Tricia Helfer and many others.

Till now, total 6 seasons of the series have been released and among them the first season premiered in January 2016 while the last one September 2021.

The series revolves around Lucifer Morningstar who abandons hell and moves to Los Angeles where he runs his own nightclub named Lux and becomes a consultant to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).
