Varisu vs Thunivu clash: Varisu emerged as Pongal Winner

The year 2023 started with a bang for the Tamil audience as they witnessed a high-voltage clash between the two superstars of the industry at the box office.

We are talking about Ajith Kumar’s Thunivu and Thalapathy Vijay’s Varisu, which have released on January 11, 2023, ahead of Pongal and took the box office south by storm.

Both movies have been creating a lot of buzz since their announcement which could be seen from their sky-high theatrical business.

As per the reports, Varisu is made on a budget of 200 crores+ whereas Ajith’s film Thunivu with 160 crores budget.

The reports read, that Ajith Kumar charged 70 Cr as his remuneration. On the other, Vijay took home a whopping amount of 120 crores for Varisu.

Varisu is a complete family entertainer whereas Thunivu is an action entertainer, despite the difference in the genres, there is no doubt that the competition is neck to neck and it is a treat for the audience for sure.

However, given the pre-release business of both the biggies, Vijay seems leading the race. Reportedly, Vijay’s ‘Varisu’ has acquired 300 crores in pre-release business which includes theatrical and non-theatrical rights. While Thunivu’s pre-release business stands at 192 Cr.

Varisu has recently crossed the 250 Cr gross mark at the box office which marks the 6th 200 Cr grosser for Thalapathy Vijay.

The overall box office collection of Varisu stands at Rs 276.2 Cr worldwide of which it earned Rs 191.2 Cr from India and Rs 85 Cr from the overseas market. It is now the 7th highest-grossing Tamil movie of all time.

On the other, its competitor, Thunivu also faring well at the box office, the total box office earnings of Thunivu stands at Rs 187.6 Cr which comprises Rs 134.6 Cr gross in India and Rs 53 Cr overseas.

Varisu is a Winner

From the box office collections of both the biggies, it is evident that Vijay’s film ‘Varisu’ has won the box office battle. Both the Pongal releases are still running at the box office although the pace has become slow.

Going by the collections, ‘Varisu’ is outdoing Thunivu in daily earnings and hence has been declared a winner by the fans, however, both the films have turned out to be commercial successes minting huge money at the box office.

Before this, the actors faced a clash in 2014 with Veeram (Ajith) & Jilla (Vijay) and the clash was in favor of the Tamil industry as both flicks went on to become a hit.

Thunivu was passed with ‘UA’ certificate by the censor board with 2hr 26 min or 146minutes whereas its competitor, Varisu has a runtime of 2hrs 49mins or 169mins. Varisu was issued a U certificate by the CBFC board.

Both Varisu and Thunivu have been garnering positive feedback from the audience as well as critics. Both movies are action entertainers featuring the leading megastars in larger-than-life avatars.
