Kannada actor Upendra is in another legal trouble. A second FIR has been filed against the actor for casteist comments against the Dalit community. The State president of Karnataka Ranadhira Pad, Byrappa Harish Kumar filed the case against the actor.
Although Upendra has been accused of making “Anti Dalit” statements before, this is not the first time. After Madhusudhan K.N., assistant director of the Social Welfare Department, reported Upendra to C.K. Acchukattu police under the SC and ST (Atrocities Prevention) Act, this is the second FIR that has been filed against him.
Why was FIR Against Upendra?
Based on Kumar’s complaint the police charged Upendra under the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The actor commented about the Dalit population during one of his Facebook Lives, and he was cited as stating, “If there is a town, it inevitably will have Dalits.”
The actor is now accused of inciting hatred, encouraging animosity between various groups based on race or religion, and committing intentional and malicious activities in order to incite religious feelings.
Upendra apologized for his remarks.
A pro-Dalit organization protested against actor Upendra in Ramanagara, Karnataka, shortly after the session because of his words, which caused outrage and uproar. After the outrage, the actor deleted the video from Facebook, and now it is not available on his profile.
Later, the actor apologized for his remarks on Facebook, in which he wrote, “Today, I unintentionally said the incorrect thing on Facebook Live and Instagram. I removed that video from my social media as soon as I realized it had harmed people’s feelings. I regret making that statement.”
