A tragic incident took place in Vadodara, Gujarat, which took the lives of 16 people to date. On Thursday, January 18, 2024, a school picnic was organized at Harni Lake, which turned into a tragedy. 14 students and 2 teachers lost their lives, and more are expected.
The students and teachers were on a boat, and the boat drowned, which caused casualties. Despite the immediate rescue, people lost their lives. The accident spot is under investigation, and the government is taking measures and providing help in every possible way.
What happened at the Vadodara school picnic?
The New Sunrise school in Vadodara organized a school picnic at Harni Motnath Lake, on the outskirts of Vadodara, and around 24 students with four teachers were on the picnic, as per the Hindustan Times. In the afternoon, all the students and teachers were on the boat ride when the boat drowned.
The immediate rescue was started by the people near the lake before the arrival of the rescue team and fire brigade team. Some students were rescued by the locals and were immediately taken to the hospital. Till now, 20 people have been rescued, and four are yet to be found.
Out of 20 people, 14 students and 2 teachers were announced dead, while the others were taken to different hospitals, and one student was taken to the SSG Hospital. As per the reports, the students were of a young age of 10 and above. The police are investigating the case and examining the reasons behind the major accident.
What is the reason behind the Vadodara boat incident?
The Harni Police has been going through the case, and till now it has been stated that the tragic incident happened due to the overburden on the boat. The reports say that the boat was overcrowded, which led to the drowning. The police officials have stated that a case has been registered against the Messrs Kotia project, who were managing the boats and allowed people on a boat to be charged with negligence and recklessness under IPC.
According to the reports, the Messrs. Kotia Project’s staff allowed the passengers to exceed the capacity of the boat, but they did not ensure that the boat was in proper condition or equipped with life jackets and other safety gear. The passengers were also not informed about the critical safety instructions, which led to the drastic accident.
The Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel, has expressed grief, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of 50,000 to the injured and 2 lakhs to the family of the deceased from the PMNRF. The ministers have promised that strict action will be taken in the matter, and a case has been filed against 18 people, and the police are gathering evidence against the accused.
