Four people, including the main accused’s wife, have been arrested in the kidnapping and killing of two Meitei students in Manipur. The CBI is investigating the matter at full speed, but the people demanding justice are not satisfied with the government and its probe agencies.
The students’ protest in Manipur is posing a challenge to the government. Opening schools is a major concern for the security of students’ lives. The state government initially decided to close schools and colleges from September 27 to September 29, but since the situation was not under control, the closure was extended until October 5, and it may be extended further.
Are Manipur Schools Closed Tomorrow 6 October?
In line with the government’s decision, the Directorate of Education-Schools in Manipur had ordered the closure of all state government, state government-aided, and private unaided schools for a period initially set for three days, from September 27 to September 29. However, the extension means schools are closed until at least October 5, or potentially longer, pending further notice from the state government, an official announcement is yet to happen.
Why are schools in Manipur closed?
In July, two students disappeared, and their bodies were found last week. Photos of the incident went viral on social media, leading to a community riot in the state. Even as there were updates on the case, students kept expressing their disapproval of the brutal act. To deal with the growing protests, especially after several students got hurt during the demonstrations, the authorities have put a curfew in place in the capital city, Imphal, and other areas of the state.
The protest was organized by six major student bodies in Manipur, voicing their concerns against the kidnapping and killing of the students and the disproportionate force used by security personnel against protesting students. The two had gone missing during an ethnic conflict in July 2023, and the recent circulation of their photographs on social media shocked everyone.
