The north-eastern state of India, Sikkim, has been experiencing extreme rains for the past few days. Yesterday, the state experienced a cloudburst, which has created flood-like situations in many parts.
Several properties have been damaged, and the floods have created a danger to people’s lives. As per the latest reports, 14 people have already lost their lives, and 102 people are missing, including 23 Army personnel.
In addition, a river overflow caused the Singhtam Footbridge across the River Teesta to collapse. The army installations along the Lachen Valley were damaged as a result.

The Education Department of Sikkim has issued a notice in which they mentioned all government and private schools located in Pakyong, Gangtok, Namchi, and Mangan districts will remain shut in the state until October 8, 2023. The order was issued after the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) issued a flood alert in the state.
The circular by the Sikkim Education Department read, “In view of the unprecedented emergency situation created by the flooding of Teesta River, all government schools and private schools located in Pakyong, Gangtok, Namchi, and Mangan districts shall remain closed till 8th October 2023.”
To ensure the safety of students, the government has closed the schools in Sikkim until October 8, 2023. Also, all parents and students are advised to get in touch with school authorities and teachers for additional information.
CM’s message for all people living in Sikkim
The Chief Minister, PS Tamang-Gole, reached out to Singtam to take a view of the situation. He urged all the people of the state to “remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel during this critical time”.
CM PS Tamang-Golay, “We are all aware of the recent natural disaster that hit our state. Emergency services have been deployed in the affected areas, and I personally visited Singtam to assess the damage and interact with the local community.”
