The construction of the New Parliament Building has been completed and it was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India. The New Parliament Building is a part of the Central Vista Redevelopment Project which is an ambitious project of the Union government of India.

The Central Vista Redevelopment Project is the name given to the current renovation of Central Vista, India’s main administrative district, which is situated close to Raisina Hill in New Delhi. New Sansad Bhawan is one of the new administrative structures that will be built as part of this rehabilitation project.

The Central Vista Redevelopment Project aims to provide better public facilities and social amenities, and the New Parliament Building is one of them.

PM Modi shares video of New Parliament on twitter:

You have conveyed your thoughts very well.

Our new Parliament is truly a beacon of our democracy. It reflects the nation's rich heritage and the vibrant aspirations for the future. #MyParliamentMyPride https://t.co/oHgwsdLLli

19 Political Parties to Boycott Opening of New Parliament

The largest political parties in India, including the Congress, AAP, and DMK, among others, announced collectively that they would abstain from the opening of the new Parliament building. They said Prime Minister Modi is trying to sidelin, President Droupadi Murmu and it is a insult to president but also a “direct assault on democracy.

The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of New Sansad Bhawan on December 10, 2020, and now the New Parliament Building is all set for the inauguration. Earlier it was planned that the New Parliament Building was to be inaugurated in November 2022.

Finally the New Parliament Building was inaugurated on May 28, 2023. The inauguration ceremony took place in the new Lok Sabha chamber, which can accommodate around 900 people. This ceremony was 2 hours long and it included multi-faith prayers.

Who inaugurated New Parliament Building?

As per the Union government’s decision Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the New Sansad Bhawan on May 28, 2023, and the programme started at 11:30 a.m.

Several opposition leaders were not very happy with the fact that PM Modi inaugurated the New Parliament building. Various senior Congress politicians, like Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, Mamta Banerjee, and others, did not attend the inauguration ceremony of the New Parliament Building.

Why President should inaugurate New Parliament Building?

Article 79 of the Indian Constitution states that “There shall be a Parliament for the Union, which shall consist of the President and two Houses to be known respectively as the Council of States and the House of the People.”

If we go by this statement, the parliament consists of the president, the council of states, and the house of the people. This could be one of the very logical reasons why the President of India, Draupadi Murmu, should inaugurate the New Parliament House.

New Sansad Bhawan Cost

The New Parliament Building is a part of the Central Vista Project and the estimated cost of the whole project is Rs 20,000 crore, but as per the Union Government, this is only a ballpark figure. The bidding cost of New Sansad Bhawan was Rs. 862 crores and now the cost has escalated to more than Rs. 1200 crore.

New Parliament Building Area

The new triangular-shaped Sansad Bhawan is way more spacious than the old one. New Parliament Building is built on a huge area of about 65,000 sq. mt. While the present Parliament building is now 96 years old and it was built in the year 1927.

The old Sansad Bhawan was built in the colonial era and it lacks proper documentation and drawings to establish its structural strength. Also, the seating capacity of the present Lok Sabha and Central Hall are limited and it cannot be increased due to limited area.

New Parliament Building Location

The Parliament of any country is the symbol of the democratic spirit of a country and the Indian Parliament house is the symbol of our democratic spirit. The new Parliament Building is at the heart of the Central Vista at Connaught Place, New Delhi.

The parliament house of the World’s largest democracy is known as “the Temple of National Discussions.” The old Parliament House of India is situated at J685+V7V, Sansad Marg, Gokul Nagar, Janpath, Connaught Place, New Delhi.

New Sansad Bhawan Construction Company Details Here

Tata Projects Ltd. won the bid for the construction of the new Sansad Bhawan for Rs 861.9 crore. Also, the company has completed the project at the designated time, while the cost of the project has escalated to more than Rs. 1200 crore.

Several companies bided for the tender of Construction of the New Parliament Building but Tata Projects Ltd. won the tender. The bidding cost of Tata Projects Ltd. was just Rs 3.1 crore less than L&T’s bid of Rs 865 crore.

Need of New Parliament Building

There were several reasons why we needed a parliament building, but the most important was that there weren’t enough seats in the Old Parliament House, and the seating was crowded and awkward with no workstations past the second row. There are just 440 seats available in the Central Hall and the issue of a shortage of seats gets worse during Joint Sessions.

Since the old Parliament House was constructed during the colonial era, and no record or document of the original design of the building. Therefore, the new constructions and modifications were not possible and created a security threat.

The new and old Parliament will work together and will felicitate the smooth functioning of the Parliament. Also, a new central lounge is created to complement the open courtyard and it will be used as a place for the members to interact with each other.

One of the most important feature about the new Sansad is it is Divyang friendly. The people with dissabilities will be easlily able to move around in the Sansad Bhawan.

New Sansad Bhawan have Spacious Legistative Chambers with:

  • Lok Sabha Hall with a capacity of 888 seats.
  • Rajya Sabha Hall with a capacity of 384 seats.
  • The Central Hall will accomodate 1272 seats for Joint sessions.
