The Karnataka Elections have finally ended, and the Indian National Congress has won 135 out of 224 assembly seats in Karnataka. Now senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah has become the New Chief Minister of Karnataka.

The whole country had its eyes set on Congress and who they would choose as the new Chief Minister of the state. Siddaramaiah has been sworn in as chief minister of Karnataka, along with Karnataka Congress president D K Shivakumar as the deputy chief minister.

The swearing-in ceremony was held at Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru and was administered by Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot. This is the same stadium in which Siddaramaiah took oath in 2013 as the CM of Karnataka.

Siddaramaiah would serve as Karnataka’s new chief minister for the next 2.5 years. Shivakumar would then take over as CM, while DK Shivakumar would serve as Deputy CM for the first 2.5 years. On Saturday, May 20, 2023, Siddaramaaih will take the oath of office.

About Siddaramaiah

Siddaramaiah was born on August 3, 1947, in a remote village called Siddaramanahundi in Mysore District. His father, Siddarame Gowda, and mother, Boramma, were farmers. He has five siblings, and he is the second among them. He belongs to the Kuruba Gowda community.

Siddaramaiah was the 22nd Chief Minister of Karnataka, and he is only the second person to hold that office for a full term.

Siddaramaiah Education

Not a lot of people know, but he didn’t get any formal education until he was 10. Later, when he went to college, he got his B. Sc. and LL.B. from Mysore University. Siddaramaiah was a junior under a lawyer, Chikkaboraiah, in Mysore and later taught law for some time.

Siddaramaiah Political Career

In 1978, Siddaramaiah began his political career when Nanjunda Swamy, a lawyer from Mysore, spotted him at the district courts as a law graduate. He asked Siddaramaiah to contest and was elected to the Mysore Taluka.

Siddaramaiah contested on a Bharatiya Lok Dal ticket from the Chamundeshwari constituency and entered the 7th Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1983. This was a surprise victory for all, and Siddaramaiah earned his name and fame in the Old Mysore region.

Later, he joined the ruling Janata Party and became the first president of the Kannada Surveillance Committee (Kannada Kavalu Samiti), set up to supervise the implementation of Kannada as an official language. Even after that, he contested elections, won, and held important positions in different departments.

In 2005, after differences with H. D. Deve Gowda, Siddaramaiah was expelled from Janata Dal, and after that, he wanted to form a regional political party called “ABPJD,” but he did not succeed in this because regional parties formed earlier in Karnataka had not survived.

After that, he joined the Congress party, and in December 2006, he won the Chamundeshwari bypolls with a margin of 257 votes against M. Shivabasappa of the JDS. In 2008, he was re-elected for the fifth time in state Assembly elections, and this time he contested from Varuna Constituency.

Chief Minister of Karnataka

Siddaramaiah became the Chief Minister of Karnataka in 2013 when Congress adopted secret balloting to select the new chief minister. On May 15, 2018, he resigned from his position as Chief Minister of Karnataka, respecting the verdict of the 2018 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election.

He also holds the record of presenting the state budget 13 times as a finance minister in the government of Karnataka. Now it will be interesting to see whether he will be able to become the Chief Minister of Karnataka again or not.
