Who was Dr. S.S. Badrinath?
Dr. S.S. Badrinath was born on February 24, 1940, in Triplicane, a suburb of Chennai. He started off his education quite late due to his childhood illness at the age of 7. He attended PS High School, Mylapore, and Sri Ramakrishna Mission High School, Chennai.
Dr. Badrinath’s father, S.V. Srinivas Rao, was employed in the Madras Government Service as an engineer, and his mother was Lakshmi Devi. However, his parents died when he was a teenager. He was married to Dr. Vasanthi Iyengar, and the couple has two sons named Ananth and Seshu Badrinath.
Dr. S.S. Badrinath’s career
He completed his medical studies at Madras Medical College in 1962 with the insurance money he obtained after his father’s death. He started off his medical career with an internship at the Glasslands Hospital in New York.
He even continued his studies of basic science in ophthalmology at the New York University Medical School. After gaining training, diplomas, and experience, he returned to India in 1970 and worked for six years in a hospital in Chennai.
Dr. Badrinath then set up a private practice in ophthalmology and vitreoretinal surgery at the HM Hospital and Vijaya Hospital, Chennai. Later in 1978, he founded Sankara Nethalaya, which is a charitable non-profit eye hospital. Dr. Badrinath has done a maximum number of surgeries free of charge for needy people.
