V. Senthil Balaji, Tamil Nadu’s minister of electricity, was detained on Wednesday in connection with an accused case of money laundering. After an 18-hour interrogation at his Chennai home, Balaji was taken into custody.
Balaji was detained by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in accordance with the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). As part of the investigation into money laundering, the agency began searching multiple cities in the state on Tuesday at locations connected to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s Karur.
The decision was taken a few months after the Supreme Court authorized a police and ED investigation into an alleged cash-for-jobs fraud against him.
Madras High Court Passed Split Verdict
The Madras High Court passed the split verdict on the legality of the arrest of V Senthil Balaji by the Enforcement Directorate. On the basis of a Habeas Corpus Plea submitted by Senthil’s wife, Justice J. Nisha Banu, the senior member of the division bench, ordered the minister’s immediate release.
Justice D. Bharatha Chakravarthy, the other judge in the division, supported the legality of the arrest undertaken by the Enforcement Directorate. In the event of a tie vote, Chief Justice Sanjay Vijaykumar Gangapurwala would be consulted, who will then choose a third judge to render a decision.
Bypass surgery advised for V. Senthil Balaji
Senthil Balaji was questioned for hours before he passed out and was sent to the Multi Super Specialty Hospital in Chennai. Balaji was admitted to the hospital after expressing discomfort. The minister received a coronary angiography, according to the hospital, and was urged to have bypass surgery as soon as possible.
