Due to a recent outbreak of the Nipah virus in Kerala, the state government has taken the precautionary measure of temporarily closing all educational institutes. This encompasses schools, colleges, and tuition centers, with the most impacted region being Kozhikode.
This isn’t the first instance of Kerala schools facing closure. In the past, schools have been closed due to various reasons, including an increase in COVID-19 cases and alerts for heavy rainfall. The state government’s swift action in such scenarios showcases its commitment to ensuring the safety of its state people.
The Nipah virus infection has now been identified four times in the state. In Kozhikode, it was found in 2018 and 2021, while in Ernakulam, it was found in 2019. According to studies by the World Health Organization and ICMR, these illnesses can spread beyond Kozhikode and affect the entire state.
According to Veena George, the health minister of the state, there are already 1,080 people on the contact list of infected people, and 130 more people have been added to it today. 327 of those on the list are health professionals.
Why Govt. close all Educational Institutions?
The decision has been taken to ensure the safety and well-being of all Kerala students, staff, and the broader community. In addition to educational institutions, the Beypore Harbor, located in the Kozhikode region, has also been directed to suspend its operations until further instructions are provided. This suspension is again, a preventive measure to curb the spread of the virus and ensure the health of workers and individuals frequenting the harbour area.
When will Kerala Schools Open?
It remains uncertain as to when educational institutions in Kozhikode and affected areas will reopen. Parents, students, and educators are eagerly waiting for updates and are hopeful for a quick resolution to this health crisis. The focus now is on minimizing the spread of the virus and ensuring early detection and treatment for those affected.
It is vital for locals and visitors to stay informed and follow government guidelines and advisories closely. The rapid response to the Nipah virus outbreak indicates the seriousness with which the Kerala state government is addressing the situation. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant, avoid crowded areas, and maintain personal hygiene to reduce the risk of transmission.
