The festival of Gudi Padwa marks the new year of Maharashtrians and Konkani Hindus. It is celebrated with full enthusiasm and fervor and it also marks the arrival of spring season.
According to the Hindu Calendar, Gudi Padwa falls on the first day of the month of Chaitra and the same day is celebrated as the first day of Chaitra Navratri in North India and Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
As per Hindu Mythology, the term Gudi Padva originates from two words, Gudi, which means a flag or emblem of Lord Brahma and “Padwa” which means the first day of the phase of the moon.
Gudi consists of a bright colored cloth tied at the top of a long bamboo stick with Neem and Mango leaves and alongside, there’s also a garland of Sugar candy tied atop. It is further capped with a pot arranged in an inverted manner.
Gudi Padwa Date & Muhurat
The festival is also popularly known as Samvatsara Padvo and it literally means the first day of new Samvat. This year the Pratipada Tithi will start on March 21 at 10.52 PM and end on March 22 at 8.20 PM. Puja muhurat will be held on March 22 from 6.29 am to 7.39 am, according to Panchang.
Gudi Padwa History & Significance
It is believed that Lord Brahma created the Universe on this day and he also introduced days, weeks, months and years, that is why lord Brahma is worshiped on this day.
As per another legend, the day is celebrated to commemorate the coronation of Lord Rama after he returned to Ayodhya with his wife and brother Laxman after 14 years of exile.

The festival signifies the victory of Lord Rama against Ravana or the victory of good over evil and some people in rural Maharashtra also link the festival to Lord Shiva’s dance and coming together of the community.
On this day, people decorated their houses with flowers and by making beautiful rangolies. They visit each other’s home and also invite relatives to their house as well. Two popular and delicious dishes Puran Poli and Shrikhand are also prepared.
