As we all know, the new year has begun, and many other festivals are on their way to being observed.One of them is Pongal, which is celebrated in the month of January, around 2 weeks after New Year’s.
It is a Hindu harvest festival that is celebrated by the Tamil community in India and around the world. It is a multi-day festival. This year, Pongal will be celebrated from January 15 to January 18.
The word “Pongal” is derived from Tamil literature and means “to boil, overflow,” and refers to the traditional dish prepared from the new harvest of rice boiled in milk with jaggery (raw sugar).
The festival is said to bring abundance and prosperity. It corresponds to Makar Sankranti, the harvest festival observed across India under a variety of regional names, and is devoted to the “Surya Dev.”
Cattles are also revered during this festival because they are the primary source of dairy products. The cow dung is used as fertiliser in the field, and it is called a natural and effective fertilizer.
So, in essence, this festival is held to express gratitude to God and animals (cows and bullocks) for a successful harvest season.
Pongal festival corresponds to Makar Sankranti, Lohri, and Bhogali Bihu, which are also harvest festivals and are celebrated in different parts of the country.
