The Assamese festival of Kati Bihu is just around the corner on October 19. Bihu marks the three celestial events in the Assamese community. This auspicious occasion celebrates farming and worships the God ‘Sun’.
The three major events begin with Rongali Bihu, which is the most important of the three, which is called the season of harvest. It is celebrated with full fervor.
The next is Kongali Bihu, which means “poor”, which marks the end of the harvest and depicts scarcity of food. People pray for a good harvest and light lamps in order to honor the spirits descending to their heavenly abode.
The Bhogali Bihu marks the end of the harvest festival. ‘Bhelaghar’ is constructed near a river which is a hay house. This festival marks the abundance of harvest.
Among all three, Kati Bihu is not celebrated with more merriment than the other two as in this season the granaries are almost empty and there is very less food to eat. The reason behind calling it the Kongali (poor) Bihu is the same as there is food scarcity.
Kati Bihu is celebrated with lighting earthen lamps in storage houses, gardens, and paddy fields to pray for a good harvest and the lights help spirits of the dead to transcend into heaven with the help of these lights.
Apart from this, people worship the tulsi plant on this day and plant it throughout the month of Kati Bihu.
