The Parsi New Year also known as Navroz or Nowroz is celebrated annually on 16th August. This day is marked as a regional holiday in several parts of India, Navroz is celebrated according to the Shahenshahi calendar.
The Shahenshahi calendar is usually followed by the Indian Parsi Community, mostly living in the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat. Many Parsis take this day as a new beginning and on this day they start afresh by cleaning their houses, washing their clothes, and by making donations and exchanging presents.
History of Parsi New Year

The History of Parsi New Year goes back to 3500 years ago as a part of their Zoroastrianism religion, which was founded by the Prophet Zarathustra in Persia, today it is known by the name of Iran.
The celebration of this day has roots in the Zoroastrian philosophy, which believes in an annual renewal of all things in the universe.

When the muslim conquest of Persia happend, a re-emergence of Nowruz was seen following the rejuvenation of the Iranian dynasties. In 1079 A.D An astronomer Omar Khayyam, along with a group of scholars, founded the ‘Jalali’ calendar that commenced from the day we call Nowruz.
And in the year 2016, Nowruz was added to UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
This festival is one of the most prominent festivals for Parsis all around the world and they celebrate this day as a new start or new beginning.
