Ram Nath Kovind is an Indian leader and a politician, who is serving as the 14th and current President of India and today is his 75th birthday. He is also the first candidate from Uttar Pradesh to serve as the President of India. Before he became the president, from 2014 to 2017, he served as 26th governor of Bihar, and from 1994 to 2006 he served as a member of parliament, Rajya Sabha. he was a lawyer by profession and practiced for 16 years in Delhi high court and supreme court, before joining politics.
Early Life & Education
Ram Nath Kovind was born on 1st Oct 1945, to Maiku Lal and Kalawati, in Parankuh village in the Kanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. He was born in a Dalit family. He has four siblings and he is the youngest of all.
His father Maiku Lal was a local vaidya, use to run a shop too. His mother Kalawati was a housewife. He was born in a poor family. He was five years old when his mother died of burns when there was a fire in their watch. Kovind later donated that land.
After completing his elementary school education, he use to walk 8 km each day to Kanpur village to attend a junior school, because of no convenience available. He did his bachelor’s degree in commerce and he completed his LLB from DAV College. He used to fight for the rights of the scheduled tribes, the weaker section of the society from his college life itself.
Political Career
In 1991, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Between 1998 to 2002, he worked as president of the BJP Dalit Morcha and also worked as the president of the All-India Koli Samaj. He was also the national spoke person of the party. He gave his out of paraunkh to Rashtriya Swayamsevak dal.
In 1994, he was elected and joined as Rajya Sabha MP from the state of Uttar Pradesh. He served for twelve years till 2006. He was the chairman of the Rajya Sabha House Committee. On 20 July 2017, he won the presidential elections by 7,02,644 votes
When he was a parliamentarian, under the members of parliament local area development scheme, he focused on education development in rural areas by constructing school buildings in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. When he was a member of parliament, he visited many countries like Nepal, Thailand, Pakistan, Germany, Switzerland, and the United States on Study tours.
Before he was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, he use to work as private secretary of then prime minister, Morarji Desai.
He was on the board of Management of Bhim Rao Ambedkar University and served as a board of members of IIM Kolkata. In 2002, he represented India at the United Nations and addressed the General Assembly.
Personal Life
On 30th January 1974, Kovind got married to Savita, the couple has one son Prashant Kumar and a beautiful daughter Swati who was an air hostess for Air India.
