World Asthma day is celebrated every year to raise awareness about a disease called Asthma, which is a long-term disease of lungs. The disease make it hard to breath as it causes our airways to get inflamed and narrow.
Symptoms of the disease may vary depending on the person, but inability to breath, coughing, chest pain, whipping cough are the most common symptoms. Severe Asthma can create really serious problems such as Asthma attack can occur at any time of the day.

World Asthma Day History

The day was first observed in 1998 and was started as an endeavor by the Global Initiative for Asthma, a medical guideline organization founded in 1993 which works with public health officials and health care professionals globally to reduce Asthma prevalence, morbidity and mortality.
On this maiden World Asthma Day which was held on the sidelines of the World Asthma Meeting in Barcelona, Spain, a total of 35 countries of the world participated. Since then, the World Asthma Day is observed every year on the first Tuesday of May, also, the participation of countries has grown dramatically in these two decades.
It is a main event for raising awareness about Asthma and take some collective and collaborative measures to combat it. This year the World Asthma Day will be observed on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.
World Asthma Day Significance
The Global Asthma Report 2018 tells us that more than 1000 people die every year globally from the disease. The number is alarming and demands massive awareness, inexpensive and quality healthcare which every individual can afford. Most of all, a collaborative global response is required to tackle with this as early detection and fast treatment requires awareness.
More than 300 million people are afflicted with Asthma every year and the worse thing is that it is not at all diagnosed in most of the cases, which results in several untimely deaths. These numbers are growing every year and the sickness will continue to spread unless there is widespread awareness and universal cooperation.

World Asthma Day 2023 Theme
While Asthma cannot be cured, it can be managed to lessen and avoid asthma attacks. So to make people aware of it, every year World Asthma Day is celebrated with a theme, which promotes awareness of Asthma around the world.
The theme for World Asthma Day 2022 has been chosen by Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) as “Ashthama Care for All”, theme 2022 was “Closing Gaps in Asthma Care”, theme 2021 was “Uncovering Asthma Misconceptions”.
How to Celebrate World Asthma Day 2023?
We can celebrate the day with many innovative ways such as holding discussions, conducting awareness and most importantly in this digital era, we can also take the advantage of social media to grab people’s attention on this issue, make them aware as well as make them give people knowledge about this issue.
Along with the governments of countries, youth of the world need to come forward and take the responsibility to make the things better from their end. Groups and organizations can invite people to invite health professionals for discussions on the measures to detect symptoms and seek treatments.

Also, any outdoor excursion can be conducted along with few Asthma patients and medical professionals to provide useful on how anyone suffering from Asthma can control it outdoors if a sudden attack occurs. All the educational institutions like School, colleges universities can conduct interactive awareness drive.
