The day is a reminder of being thankful for the various advancements and opportunities that people have obtained because of science! On the day of World Science Day for Peace and Development, we are here to bring to you the history, significance, and much more about this interesting day!

World Science Day for Peace and Development History

In the year 1999 in Budapest, at the World Conference on Science, a positive outcome of the organization of a particular event of science and society was established.

It was marked to celebrate every year the aims manifested in the Declaration on Science and the Use Of Scientific Knowledge. It also focused on the follow-up of the Science Agenda: Framework for Action recommendations.

From the time it was manifested in 2001 by UNESCO, World Science Day for Peace and Development has bagged various crucial projects, funding for science, and programs throughout the world. The day also appeals for cooperation by the scientists living in conflict areas, for instance, the Israeli-Palestinian Science Organization (IPSO).

World Science Day for Peace and Development was celebrated for the first time on November 10, 2002 under UNESCO. Various governmental, non-governmental, scientific, and research institutions, schools, and science teachers took part in the celebrations.

The significance of celebrating a World Science Day for Peace and Development holds its roots in the necessity of sustainable societies with the crucial part of science and scientists in it. Its significance lies in making the world aware of the importance of the involvement of people in science.

This is how World Science Day for Peace and Development highlights the same and makes the general public realize the relevance of science in our lives. The day also promotes national and international solidarity for science among countries. It works towards the issues that science faces in achieving these goals.

World Science Day for Peace and Development 2021 Theme

This year, the theme is: “Future of STI: Impacts on Education, Skills, and Work”. The full form of STI is Science, Technology, and Innovation. The theme clearly focuses on the effects of science and technology in bringing about a drastic change in society. Be it education, or our daily life, science has been successful in making it all easier for us.

In a world of a global pandemic, science and technology have impacted our lives in a better way. We could all be safe at our homes inside and still manage to attend our schools, and offices. This was all possible because of science. This year’s theme is an attempt to throw light on the same contribution and the importance of getting involved in science and technology.

Here is a list of some previous year’s themes:

2020- “Science for and with society in dealing with COVID-19.”

2019-“Open science, leave no one behind”.

2018-“Science, a human right”.

2017-“Science for global understanding”.

2016-“Celebrating science centers and science museums”.

How is World Science Day for Peace and Development Celebrated?

For science teachers across the globe, this day holds a special place as this day brings an amazing opportunity to make their class aware and inspire them of the important role that science plays in our society.

The event is celebrated differently in different schools. It is conducted according to the theme of the year. Following is a list of activities that take place on this day:

  • Science Quiz Competitions.
  • Picture quiz where the students are shown hidden pictures of famous scientists or inventors and are asked to name them.
  • Timeline Quiz, where the students are asked the exact date of the important inventions and developments in science.
  • MCQ Quiz Competitions. This quiz holds important questions related to science and technology.
  • Apart from this, there are different campaigns and rallies that are organized on this day.
