Kerala jail ties up with Swiggy to sell the food made by the inmates

The prison authorities in Kerala have tied up with Swiggy to tap the hugely popular food market online. People can now get piping hot biryani prepared by the prison inmates delivered right at their doorstep.

With the ever-rising demand for tasty food, new delivery joints have hurdled in the market to satisfy the hunger pangs of the customers.

The authorities at the Viyyur Central Jail have tied up with Swiggy, which is one the largest food delivery app, for online sales of food prepared by the prison inmates.

In this first of its kind initiative, the people can now get scrumptious chicken biryani combo with a bottle of drinking water from Central Prison, Viyyur in Kerala right at their doorstep.

The prison inmates have been running a canteen from the past few years in the name of “Freedom Food Factory”. The service will now reach a wider segment of customers with the help of the food delivery app Swiggy with which the jail authorities have tied up.

The combo will include 300 grams of biryani rice, chicken curry, a fried leg piece, pickle, four chapatis, a bottle of water and salad. There will also be an option for the customers where they can select whether they want to include a bottle of water in this combo or not. If they don’t buy water, the combo will cost only Rs 117.

The delivery will be initially restricted to the radius of 6 km of the jail in the city of Thrissur. This project was launched on Thursday in the presence of superintendent NS Nirmalandan Nair and other officers.

The best thing about this new project is that everything from preparing food to packing it will be handled by the prison inmates.
