The roads of Uttarakhand are prone to accidents. Within a fortnight or so the state has witnessed the spate of accidents. More recently, an SSB vehicle too had skidded off the road and fell into the river Pinder in Chamoli.
In this accident, the officer along with his vehicle drifted in the strong currents of the river and was reported traceless. The driver of his vehicle was rescued somehow by the local people.
Prior to it on 9 July, a GMOU bus had fallen into a 500 meter deep gorge in Reethakhal in Pauri killing four persons and injuring 21 others.
And even before this on 6th July, an Alto car skidded off the road and fell into a 700 meter deep gorge near Satpuli. In this accident, two persons were killed on the spot whereas three others had sustained injuries.
The reason for these accidents is the condition of the roads. Most of the motorways in hilly terrain are in a dilapidated condition apart from being very congested.
The work is underway for the construction of the all-weather road in Uttarakhand for the convenience of Chardham pilgrims. The government should focus on other link roads too to avoid such accidents.
