Debut to Stardom
Born to actor Pankaj Kapoor and dancer Neelima Azeem, Shahid Kapoor had an interest in dancing and acting at an early age. At the age of 15, he joined Shiamak Davar’s dance institute and appeared in a number of Bollywood songs as a background dancer. Later on, he did many commercials for popular brands and went on to appear in a music video of Kumar Sanu and music group Aryans.
Impressed with his performance in the music video Aankhon Mein, producer Ramesh Taurani promised him a role in his movie. Shahid Kapoor made his debut with Ramesh Taurani’s teen romance Ishq Vishk opposite Amrita Rao. The movie went to be a sleeper hit and earned Shahid Kapoor a Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.
He later appeared in crime-thriller Fida alongside Kareena Kapoor and Fardeen Khan and in romantic-comedy Dil Maange More alongside Soha Ali Khan, Tulip Joshi and Ayesha Takia. Both his releases failed at the box office and he was considered to be imitating the acting style of Shah Rukh Khan. His next couple of releases including Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi!, Shikhar and Chup Chup Ke failed to perform at the box office and Shahid Kapoor’s acting career started to fade out.
In the year 2006, Shahid Kapoor got commercially successful movies, 36 China Town and Vihah, but failed to prove himself as an actor. The former received mixed reviews while the latter received mostly negative reviews from the critics.
