India finally got a new No.1 in chess after 37 years. The teenage Grandmaster D. Gukesh has replaced the legendary Viswanathan Anand as India’s top chess player. Vishwanathan Anand has been India’s No. 1 since July 1986.
Viswanathan Anand is the first person that springs to mind when we think of chess. Anand has been in the middle of things since he was made a grandmaster in 1988 in a sport that demands mental strength. He accomplished it for the first time as an Indian.
Gukesh D, who recently lost in the quarterfinals of the FIDE World Cup in Baku to Magnus Carlsen, moved ahead of Anand to be ranked No. 8 in the world. Anand, a five-time world champion, is currently ranked No. 9.
The International Chess Federation, or FIDE, revised its rankings on Monday, and Gukesh formally assumed the position of No. 1 in India. He is now ranked eighth in the world with an ELO rating of 2758, which is higher than Anand’s total of 2754 ranking points.
