Who is Achinta Sheuli?
Achinta Sheuli, the 20- year old gold medalist hails from a small village named Deulpur of Howrah district of West Bengal. The star player has seen a lot of struggle in his life. Before taking weightlifting as a career, he used to help his mother Poornima Sheuli in embroiling and stitching work, to augment his family’s income.
The star player’s father Jagat Sheuli was a rickshaw-puller and a part-time driver, whose income wasn’t enough to make ends meet, so his mother took to stitching and embroidery to support the family.
In 2013, his father died due to heart -attack and Achinta’s elder brother Alok had to sacrifice his fledgling weightlifting career to look after his family. Alok saw a spark in Achinta and enrolled him in his gym as a member, to later enroll him in weightlifting to realise his unfulfilled dream.
With winning the gold at CWG 2022, the young weightlifter has fulfilled his father’s last wish as well as his brother Alok’s unfulfilled dreams to win gold for the country.
