Sunday proved a black day of accidents. At least 10 people are reported killed in separate incidents that took place in different parts of Uttarakhand and 20 others were injured. Amid reports of accidents, there is news of relief too. In a separate but major accident, as many as 32 people had a miraculous escape after the bus full of passengers rolled down towards the gorge and remained halfway suspended in the air after collision with a car.
The first accident took place on National Highway-94 where at least four Kanwarias were killed and the other mishap occurred on Chamba-Sabali motorway where a car lost control and fell into a gorge. In this accident, two people were killed while three others sustained serious injuries.
On Sunday a Max carrying Kanwarias of Haryana met with an accident on NH-94 when a big boulder fell on their vehicle on way to Rishikesh after taking Ganga-Jal from Gangotri. In this accident, four Kanwarias Lokesh (23), Jeetendra alias Sunny and Kamal Singh (21, all residents of Kaushali, Rewari in Haryana) were killed on the spot while seriously injured Bhupesh (26) succumbed to his injuries in the hospital during treatment.
Six others got injured in the accident. There were 10 Kanwarias on board the ill-fated vehicle. SDM Ukta Mishra said that the accident took place when big boulders fell on the vehicle. Another report reaching here puts the number of casualties to six rather than four.
As per reports, it was near Kunjapuri Bagardhar where the boulders fell on the passing vehicle at around 1.00 P.M. in the afternoon after a massive landslide. As the news spread, the rescue team rushed to the spot and started extricating the Kanwarias trapped in the badly mangled vehicle. All the injured persons were referred to AIIMS at Rishikesh after primary treatment at Narendra Nagar.
The D.M. Dr. V. Shanmugam, SSP Dr. Yogendra Singh Rawat, and CMO Dr. Bhagirathi Jangpangi ordered the postmortem of the deceased at the accident site. The injured include Sachin (25), Gaurav Yadav (24), Sandeep alias Lala (25), Jatin (27), Pramod (34) and Shubham (21), Ajay Kumar (27) and Surendra (30).
In another incident that took place the same day on Chamba-Sabali highway, a car lost control and fell into a gorge killing two people on the spot and injuring three others. It was around 10 A.M in the morning when a Maruti 800 car (UK 07AA 1811) skidded off the road and fell into a 200-meter deep gorge. Deepak Bahuguna (40) and Prerna (17) got killed on the spot while Taradutt Bahuguna (60), Sanjana Semwal (16) and Saksham Bahuguna (03, all residents of Sabali village under Chamba police station of Tehri Garhwal) sustained injuries. They have been admitted to a private Maseeha hospital in Chamba.
