Siddaramaiah was born on August 3, 1947, in a remote village called Siddaramanahundi in Mysore District. He belongs to the Kuruba Gowda community.

Siddaramaiah belonged to a lower middle-class family; his father, Siddarame Gowda, and mother, Boramma, were farmers.

He has five siblings and he is the second among them. Siddaramaiah is married to  Parvathi, and together the couple has two sons.

Siddaramaiah did not go to school until he was 10, but he got his B.Sc. and LL.B. degree from Mysore University.

Siddaramaiah’s elder son, Rakesh, who was also a politician, died when he was just 38 due to multiple organ failure and his Yathindra is also a politician.

Siddaramaiah entered politics in 1978, and he was elected to the Mysore Taluka Board.

Siddaramaiah wanted to form a regional political party called "ABPJD," but he did not succeed in this because regional parties formed earlier in Karnataka had not survived.

Siddaeamaiah joined the Congress party in December 2006 after being expelled from the Janata Dal.

In 2008, Siddaramaiah was re-elected for the fifth time in state Assembly elections, and this time he contested from Varuna Constituency.

Siddaramaiah became the Chief Minister of Karnataka in 2013, and up until 2019, Siddaramaiah had around 50 criminal cases registered against him.
