Dariush Mehrjui, who was one of the most prominent filmmakers in Iran, has died. He was stabbed to death alongside his wife, Vahideh Mohammadifar, close to their home in Tehran.
Mehrjui invited his daughter, Mona for dinner at their home in Karaj, west of Tehran. But upon her arrival an hour and a half later, she found the bodies of her dead parents with fatal wounds to their necks.
The investigating authorities said there were no forced entry proofs, and they’ve also arrested two suspects in the case. A few days ago, Dariush Mehrjui’s wife, Vahideh Mohammadifar, said they were receiving death threats.
Golshifteh Farahani, who is one of the most prominent Iranian actresses, paid condolences to Meherjui. She took to Instagram and shared a picture of herself with the veteran filmmaker and said, “The 83-year-old director Darius Mehrjoui and his wife were murdered last night inside their house with a knife. I did my very first movie, The Pear Tree, with him when I was 14 years old.
He was one of the most incredible directors of Iran and a great friend throughout these 26 years. I am without words to describe how this makes all of us feel about the state of Iran. State of this world. State of humanity.”

Dariush Mehrjui was an Iranian filmmaker. He was born on December 8, 1939, in Tehran, Iran.
Mehrjui was a member of the Iranian Academy of the Arts and a founding member of the Iranian New Wave movement of the early 1970s, which also included directors Masoud Kimiai and Nasser Taqvai. He started gaining fame after the release of his film, “The Cow.”
Mehruji did his studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. After that, he came back to Iran and started making films in the country, and he was associated with the new wave of cinema in Iran.
