Arjuna Award is one of the most prestigious sports awards. Arjuna Awards for Outstanding Performance in Sports and Games is presented by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and was introduced in 1961.
The Arjuna Awards nominations are received by all government-recognized National Sports Federations, the Indian Olympic Association. The Arjuna Award is named after the famous character Arjuna of the epic Mahabharata as he marks the symbol of hard work, concentration, and dedication.
On 20 December 2023, the Sports Ministry released a list of sportspersons and among all of them, Cricketer Mohammad Shami will be awarded the Arjuna Award in 2024 for his phenomenal performance in World Cup 2023.
The Arjuna Award ceremony will start at 11 AM on January 9 and Mohammed Shami has reacted to his getting the Arjuna Award. Shami said, “It is difficult to explain this moment. All I can say is ‘dreams come true’. It is my life’s biggest achievement and the result of hard work.”
About Arjuna Award
Arjuna Awards are India’s second-highest sporting honor. The highest sports award is the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. The recipients of the Arjun Award are selected by a committee constituted by the Ministry. The sportspersons are honored for their good performance in the field of sports, leadership, sportsmanship, and a sense of discipline.
The Arjun Award consists of a bronze statuette of Arjuna, Certificates, a Ceremonial dress, and a cash prize of Rs 15 lakh. Arjun award is given to the disciplines included in the events like Paralympic Games, Asian Games, Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championship, and World Cup along with cricket and Parasports.
