Karpoori Thakur, the former Chief Minister of Bihar, often referred to as Jan Sevak, was awarded the Bharat Ratna (posthumously) in 2024. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself announced that Karpoori Thakur’s social contributions will be celebrated with Bharat Ratna.
Karpoori Thakur served two terms as the Chief Minister of Bihar. First from December 1970 to June 1971, and second from June 1977 to April 1979.
The Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award given to people to recognize their exceptional work in their respective fields. C. Rajagopalachari, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, and C. V. Raman were the first recipients of the Bharat Ratna in 1954.
About Karpoori Thakur
Karpoori Thakur was born on January 24, 1924, at Pitaunjhia (now Karpuri Gram) in the Samastipur District of Bihar. Thakur’s father’s name was Gokul Thakur, and his mother’s name was Ramdulari Devi.
Karpoori Thakur was heavily inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and Satyanarayan Sinha. He became a student activist and joined the All India Students Federation. As a student activist, he joined the Quit India Movement. He spent 26 months in prison for his participation in the Indian independence movement.

Karpoori, who was referred to as the People’s Leader with affection, made a significant contribution to Indian politics and was immensely inspirational in his uncomplicated manner.
In honor of the late Thakur’s 100th birthday, the Ministry of Finance decided to create a commemorative coin. The coin will have a value of ₹100; however, commemorative coins are meant to recognize and celebrate institutions, people, places, and events.
Even though they are legal tender, they are not produced for public use. Furthermore, the cost of the coin is significantly greater than the value indicated on it.
