On Wednesday, the Congress party expelled its member, Sanjay Nirupam, for six years, effective immediately. This decision was made in response to complaints regarding his lack of discipline and anti-party statements, particularly during negotiations over seat-sharing with ally Shiv Sena (UBT).
During a meeting of the party’s campaign committee in Mumbai, Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole announced that the party has removed Nirupam’s name from the list of star campaigners. Furthermore, he revealed that disciplinary measures have been taken against Nirupam due to his criticisms directed at both the party and the leadership of the state unit.
Posting a screenshot of the email wherein he tendered his resignation to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Nirupam remarked on X, “It appears that soon after the party received my resignation letter last night, they promptly proceeded with my expulsion. It’s commendable to witness such prompt action. Just sharing this information.”
Nirupam maintained his defiance and stated that he would announce his position between 11:30 AM and 12:00 PM. Although his statement is still awaited.
Yesterday, he took a dig and advised Congress not to squander “stationery” amidst its financial struggles, suggesting that the party should utilize resources wisely to address its current crisis. Nirupam stated that the deadline he had set for the party concludes today, and he will outline his future plans tomorrow.
The timeframe mentioned alluded to Nirupam’s prior statements, wherein he had given the Congress a week to determine whether to terminate the alliance with the Shiv Sena (UBT). If Mr. Nirupam chooses to switch parties, he is likely to have numerous options, as leaders from both the BJP and the Eknath Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena have indicated their willingness to welcome him into their parties.
