Asia Cup is a men’s One Day International and Twenty20 International cricket tournament. It was established in 1983 by Asian Cricket Council (ACC). The sole aim behind Asia cup was to promote goodwill between Asian countries.
The first Asia Cup was held in 1984 in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates where the council’s offices were based (until 1995). The Asian Cricket Council was diminished in size in 2015. The International Cricket Council (ICC) declared that, starting in 2016, Asia Cup matches would alternate between ODIs and T20 International formats in accordance with the format of upcoming international competitions.
The 16th Asia Cup will be organized by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). In September 2023, Pakistan will host the Asia Cup. The event will feature participation from the five full members of the Asian Cricket Council.
The winners of the qualification tournament will join them. The dates and format of the competition were confirmed when the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) released the pathway structure and calendar for 2023 and 2024 in January 2023. The competition was originally slated to take place in 2021, but due to a busy schedule, it was moved to 2023, with Pakistan serving as the hosts.
India & Pakistan Controversy
As we all know, Pakistan is hosting the Asia Cup in 2023, and a major controversy has erupted between India and Pakistan regarding this. India is considering not going to Pakistan for the matches due to security reasons.
As of now, no solution has been seen regarding this problem, and last year India demanded that the venue of the matches be changed. According to the most recent updates from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chief, Najam Sethi, he revealed the date of the ACC meeting in the Asia Cup row as well as opened up on the new demands made by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Earlier PCB Chairman Najam Sethi said, the meeting with ACC officials is lined up for February 4th in Baharain. Sethi also said the BCCI wants Pakistan to travel to India but not India to travel to Pakistan. In relation to his statement, India will host the ICC World Cup 2023 entirely in India this year. So for the World Cup, Pakistan has to travel to India.
Following the ACC’s emergency meeting, called by PCB president Najam Sethi, was conducted in Bahrain on February 4, a calendar was made public, although Pakistan was not listed as the host nation for the September 2023 Asia Cup.
Sethi announced that the issue had not been resolved after the meeting. The most likely solution, according to sources close to the PCB, is for India to play its matches in the UAE while the rest of the tournament is played in Pakistan.
