NIT Silchar: The National Institute Of Technology Silchar (NITS), or NIT Silchar, is an autonomous institute that started as a Regional Engineering College in 1967 in Silchar, Assam. The college is a deemed university, renamed the National Institute of Technology in 2002. NITS is recognized by UGC and its courses are approved by AICTE.

The institute comprises 12 academic departments divided into engineering and non-engineering departments that provide UG, PG, and Ph.D. courses. The National Institutional Ranking Framework ranked NIT Silchar 40th for engineering in 2023.

B.Tech. and M.Tech. are The flagship courses at NIT Silchar. The institute offers admission to these courses through the ranks achieved in JEE Mains and GATE, respectively. The highest package offered at NITS in the campus placement of 2022 is INR 44 LPA.

The institute offers over 20 courses at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. At the UG level, NITS offers its flagship course, B.Tech., with six specializations. Entrance Exam 

NIT Silchar accepts entrance exams at the national and state level for admission in various courses, followed by counselling for B.Tech., M.Tech., and M.Sc. Given below are the courses at NIT Silchar, along with the exam to be qualified:

Cut-off

The institute is granted the status of an ‘Institute of National Importance’ and is the mentor institute for NIT Nagaland. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recognised NITS, and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has approved NITS. NIRF has ranked the institute 83rd position and in the 40th position for engineering in 2023. IIRF has ranked NIT Silchar 64th out of 193 for engineering in India in 2023.

The QS World University Rankings have ranked the university 410–450 in Asia and 92nd in Southern Asia in 2023. The Times Higher Education has ranked the institute 601st in the World University Rankings and 201st in the Asia University Rankings for 2023.

NIT Silchar Infrastructure

The campus of Silchar covers an area of 625 acres and is located on the Silchar-Hailakandi Road, on the outskirts of Silchar, Assam. NITS is within reach of public transport facilities, as the nearest bus station is ISBT Silchar. The Silchar railway station is only 10 minutes away from the campus. It is at a distance of approximately 35 km from the airport.

The institute is on green land and is second-best for its infrastructure in the northeast region after IIT Guwahati. The college provides all the basic amenities, including an administration area containing a dispensary, an academic building, a library, and a staff canteen. The other facilities include staff quarters, a student activity center, and a guest house. The campus also provides facilities like an e-Rickshaw for hostel-to-academic blocks, ramps, and special toilets for the Physically challenged.

How to Apply for NIT Silchar 2023

NITS admits students through the score obtained in JEE Mains. Students interested in admission to the flagship course, B.Tech., must clear the JEE Mains exam and then register for JOSAA counselling. Given below are the steps you need to follow for seat allotment in NITS.

• Browse the official website of JoSAA at https://josaa.nic.in.
• Register for the JoSAA conference using your JEE Main application number and password.
• Check your profile and fill in any incomplete details.
• Upload the documents requested for registration and then click on ‘Submit changes’.
• Now you are to select the college and specialisations you prefer in accordance with the marks you received.
• Pay the application fee after filling out the form.
• Seats are allotted on the basis of the JEE Mains rank and the choice entered by you.
• Next step is document verification and payment of admission fees for seat allotment.

NIT Silchar Scholarship 2023

The institute awards scholarships to meritorious students from economically weaker sections. The scholarships are financial aid given to students pursuing UG, PG, and Ph.D. courses at NITS. These scholarships are fee waivers, fee concessions, or pocket allowances specially designed for students. The scholarships awarded by NIT Silchar are as follows:

1. Bharti Infratel Scholarship Programme (BISP) for students with disabilities pursuing education in government-recognised Institutes of National Importance (INI) located in North-East India.
2. Merit-based Swami Dayanand Charitable Educational Foundation Scholarship for students pursuing engineering Courses in India. The student must have secured at least 85% marks in 12th grade and 25,000 ranks in the JEE Main Examination to be awarded this scholarship.

NIT Silchar Placement  

The institute has not released the campus placement report for 2023. The campus placement of 2022 recorded the highest package of INR 44 LPA offered by Amazon and Microsoft’s second-highest package of INR 41.86 LPA. The average package for the top two B.Tech specializations, CSE and ECE, stood at INR 14.90 LPA and INR 12.27 LPA, respectively. The median package for the same stood at INR 12.47 LPA and INR 9.9 LPA, respectively.
