Who was Jaswant Singh Gill
Jaswant Gill hailed from Sathiala in Amritsar, born on November 22, 1937. He pursued his initial schooling at an Urdu School in Amritsar and later completed his Class 12 from the prestigious Khalsa College School, Amritsar. He further went on to graduate in mining engineering, setting the foundation for his remarkable career.
Career & Heroic Rescue
Upon graduation, Gill began his career at Chand Thapar & Bros (coal Sales) Ltd. However, after gaining experience for a few years, he transitioned to Coal India Limited in 1972 as an engineer. Rising through the ranks due to his commitment and skills, he eventually became the additional chief mining engineer of the mine.
1989 stands as a pivotal year in Gill’s life. During a tragic coal mine collapse in Raniganj, West Bengal, 65 miners were trapped. While many considered the situation to be a hopeless case, Gill, with unparalleled courage, decided to intervene. His actions not only showcased his expertise but also his immense humanity. Risking his own life, he managed to save 64 of the trapped miners, which was a testament to his bravery and skillset.
Legacy & Recognitions
For his valor, Gill was awarded the ‘Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak’ in 1991 by the then President Ramaswamy Venkataraman. A recognition of the highest order, it truly encapsulates the spirit of service and selflessness exhibited by Gill.

Demise
On November 26, 2019, the nation mourned the loss of this hero when he suffered a fatal cardiac arrest at his residence in Amritsar. Gill took his last breath at his home in Amritsar, Punjab, India. His last rites were performed at Gurudwara Chhevin Patshahi, A/B Block, Ranjit Avenue, Amritsar, Punjab.
