Eid al-Adha or Eid ul-Adha is the second and biggest of the two main holidays celebrated by the Muslim community around the world, Eid-ul-Fitr brings the other one.
It is an annual festival which means the festival of sacrifice and is celebrated to mark and honor the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim or Abraham to sacrifice his son Ismail as an act of obedience to Allah’s command.
Eid al-Adha
As per ancient text, when Ibrahim was ready to sacrifice his son, Saitan tempted Ibrahim and dissuaded him from making the sacrifice, but he stood firm. Allah saw his pure dedication towards him and sent an angel with a sheep to be slaughtered instead of Ismail.
Eid al-Adha Date
This year the crescent moon will be sighted in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh for the Eid-ul-Adha, on the evening of Wednesday, June 28, 2023, and the festival will be celebrated on June 29. In the Indian sub-continent, it is most commonly called Bakr-Eid, Bakra-eid, or Bakrid.
According to the Islamic lunar calendar, Eid ul-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah and lasts for 4 days while in the Gregorian calendar, the dates vary from year to year, shifting approximately 11 days earlier each year.
Muslims around the world celebrated this day by offering special prayers of Allah. As part of the celebration, they also slaughtered animals and consumed the meat. Sweets and gifts are given, and extended family members are typically welcomed.
