As we all know, New year is about to come, lots of other festivals are on their way to be cherished. One of them is Pongal, which is celebrated in the month of January, around 2 weeks after New Year.
It is a Hindu harvest festival that is celebrated by the Tamil community in India and around the world. It is a multi-day festival.
The word Pongal is derived from Tamil Literature which means “to boil” and “spillover”, and it shows abundance and prosperity.
It is celebrated to be thankful to Surya Dev or Lord Sun for a good harvest season by seeking blessings.

Cattles are also worshiped in this festival as they are the main source of dairy products. The cow dung is used as fertilizer in the field, and it is called a natural and effective fertilizer.
So basically this festival is celebrated to express thanksgiving to god and animals (cows, bullocks), for a good harvest season.
Pongal festival corresponds to Makar Sankranti, Lohri, Bhogali Bihu which are also harvested festivals and are celebrated in different parts of the country.
