The month of Muharram holds great significance for Muslims as it commemorates the death anniversary of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson Husayn Ibn Ali al-Hussein who died at the Battle of Karbala on the 10th day and this event is referred to as Ashura.
The word ‘Ashura’ is derived from the Arabic word ‘tenth’ and the day of Ashura falls on the 10th day of muharram month.
Why did the Ashura Holiday get postponed?
This year the Muharram moon was sighted on 30 July, after which the holiday was accordingly postponed. And as the Ashura falls on the 10th day of muharram month, this year it will be observed on August 9, 2022 (Tuesday) instead of 2022 (Monday).
