The well-known Indian boxer, Mary Kom talked about her retirement. In a recent event, Mary Kom stated that she is retiring from boxing. Boxer Mary Kom has always inspired people, especially women and her zeal and hard work have crafted history.
Renowned boxer, Mary Kom is considered the first female boxer who achieved six world titles in the history of Boxing. Mary Kom is a five-time Asian Champion is the first female boxer of India who took home the gold medal in the 2014 Asian Games. Some reports now claim that Mary Kom has not announced her retirement.
Is Mary Kom Forced to Quit Boxing?
In an event on Wednesday, 24 January 2024, boxer Mary Kom announced that she is taking retirement from boxing after so many years. Mary Kom hung her gloves as the boxer turned 41 and as per the International Boxing Association (IBA) rules, male and female boxers can compete in elite-level competition only till the age of 40.
The Boxing champion, Mary Kom stated in an event that she still has the hunger to compete but unfortunately because of the age limit it’s over for her and she cannot compete in any competition. Kom further added that she wants to play more but she is being forced to quit (due to the age limit), and she has to retire. She concluded by saying that she achieved everything in her life.
Is Mary Kom Retiring?
As per the recent report of Thursday, 24 January 2024, Mary Kom came forward and made some clarification regarding her retirement and said that she hasn’t announced her retirement and has been misquoted. She will personally come in front of the media whenever she wants to announce it.
According to the reports of ANI, Mary Kom said that she had gone through some media reports stating that she had announced retirement but that is not true. She was attending a school event in Dibrugarh on 24 January 2024 where she was motivating children.
Mary Kom motivated students by saying that she still has a hunger to achieve in sports but the age limit in the Olympics doesn’t allow her to participate though but she can carry on with her sports. She ended by saying that she is still focusing on her fitness and that whenever she announces retirement she will inform everyone.
Mary Kom Career
Mary Kom was inclined toward boxing since her school times and in 2000, she started playing and won the state championship. She further grew in the field of boxing and played for several years. Mary took a break from boxing after her marriage when she gave birth to her twin children. Kom made a comeback and won a silver medal at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship.
Mary Kom made her strong comeback after giving birth to her second child and with her with her passion and hard work, she made a successful career in boxing. She earned many medals, rewards, and achievements which created history in the world of boxing as Mary Kom is the first female boxer to win six world titles.
Mary Kom earned the World Championships titles in 2005, 2006, 2008, and 2010, and in 2012 she earned a bronze medal in the Olympics. After a break Mary Kom returned and In 2018, she made her sixth world title/ She created a milestone, and apart from these, Mary Kom played and won various other titles and championships.
