The Republic of India will soon be changed to Bharat. India, one of the most populous and fastest-growing economies, will soon change its name from India to Bharat.
The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, has shown great enthusiasm for changing the name of the country to Bharat. One of the events that most demonstrate the central government’s ambition to rename the nation occurred at the G20 Summit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi sat behind a sign that read Bharat, not India, at the conference’s inaugural summit. Additionally, President Droupadi Murmu’s invitations to the G20 reception dinner, which she hosted, referred to her as the “President of Bharat.”
What is the meaning of Bharat?
According to popular belief, Bharat was the ancestor of the Kurus, a widely featured clan in the Mahabharata. Bharat overcame all of India, rose to the position of Chakravarti (universal monarch), and gave the nation its name.
Also, as per the Vishnu Purana, “the country that lies north of the ocean and south of the snowy mountains is called Bharata, for there dwelt the descendants of Bharata.” Bhishma Parva, the sixth book of the Mahabharata, goes into considerably more detail, outlining the peoples and kingdoms of Bharatavarsha in its tenth chapter.
How will India be changed with Bharat?
It is crucial that modern people understand that the terms India and Bharat are both used to refer to the same country. The Indus River gave rise to India, whereas Hindu mythology gave rise to Bharat. Both names are accepted by the Indian Constitution and are used interchangeably.
Article 1 of the Indian Constitution states that: 1. India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States.
2. The States and the territories thereof shall be as specified in the First Schedule.
3. The territory of India shall comprise —
(a) the territories of the States;
(b) the Union territories specified in the First Schedule; and
(c) such other territories as may be acquired.
As per the Indian Constitution, Bharat is another official name for India. So if the central government wants to choose one between the two, then they need to make amendments to Article 1 of the Indian Constitution.
