Former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal will be publishing an unconditional apology letter in the National Daily. The case was registered against Tarun Tejpal and journalist Aniruddha Bahal in 2002 for accusing retired Major General MS Ahluwalia, of corruption in import deals of defense equipment in 2001.
Tejpal and Aniruddha Bahal told the division bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Pritam Singh Arora that they would “make it clear that Ahluwalia neither asked for nor accepted any bribe”. In response to that, the court then asked the two to publish the apology in Hindustan Times within two weeks, and also deposit Rs 10 lakh each with the court.
What was Tarun Tejpal’s report?
Tehelka released a report in 2001, which was nearly 23 years ago. In addition to exposing wrongdoing associated with defense equipment import transactions, the report implicated Ahluwalia as a collaborator in the fraudulent practices.
The report was a component of the widely publicized “Operation West End” sting operation. George Fernandes, the defense minister at the time, BJP president Bangaru Laxman, a few other senior ministers, and high-ranking military personnel resigned as a result.
However, Ahluwalia, who was included in the report and the recordings, said that the transcripts and videotapes showed him to be requesting Rs 10 lakh and Blue Label whiskey from the magazine’s correspondent. In April 2002, he subsequently filed a defamation lawsuit in the Delhi High Court.
