The legendary agricultural scientist and a key architect of the country’s ‘Green Revolution,’ M. S. Swaminathan passed away at the age of 98 on September 28, 2023. Swaminathan is survived by three daughters.
For the achievement of the ‘Green Revolution’, a program that enabled a quantum leap in the production of wheat and rice through the adaption of chemical-biological technology, Dr. Swaminathan collaborated closely with two Union Agriculture Ministers, C. Subramaniam, and Jagjivan Ram.
MS Swaminathan is also the recipient of Padma Vibushan, Padma Bhushan, Ramon Magsaysay Award, and Padma Shri awards.

Mina Swaminathan was born on March 29, 1933, to Mathuram and Subrahmanya Bhoothalingam. She belonged to a very well-to-do family, her mother, Subrahmanya Bhoothalingam, was a novelist and playwright, and her father, Mathuram, was an Indian civil servant and economist.

Mina Swaminathan graduated with a B.A. (Hons) degree in 1953 from Delhi University. Later, she got her M.A. (English) degree in 1958 from Panjab University and later earned a B.Ed. degree in 1956 from the Central Institute of Education. She earned her M.A. (Cantab) in 1961 in Economics from Cambridge University.

MS Swaminathan was born on 7 August 1925 in Kumbakonam, Madras. He was the second child of general surgeon M. K. Sambasivan and Parvati Thangammal Sambasivan, and they hailed from Alappuzha district in Kerala.
He got his undergraduate degree in Zoology University College, Thiruvananthapuram at the University of Kerala. Then he moved to Madras University and earned a degree in Agricultural Sciences from the University of Madras.
He relocated to the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) in New Delhi in 1947 to further his studies in plant breeding and genetics. In 1949, he earned a postgraduate degree in cytogenetics with good distinction.
