Delhi is under a 29-day curfew until February 15. In the wake of the Republic Day celebration, several activities will be banned during this time, such as flying non-traditional aerial platforms in the nation’s capital, such as paragliders, hang gliders, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).
Sanjay Arora, the Commissioner of Police in Delhi, issued a notification announcing the implementation of Section 144 in the nation’s capital. Additionally, unless it is revoked earlier, this order will take effect on January 18, 2024, and it will stay in effect for 29 days, or until February 15, 2024 (both days included).
From January 19 to January 26, there will be no flights from Delhi Airport between 10:20 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. operated by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL). In addition, about 8,000 police officers have been stationed throughout Delhi in preparation for the march on January 26.
What is Section 144?
Any state or territory’s executive magistrate may issue an order under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) of 1973 that forbids the gathering of four or more people in one location. Every participant in such a “unlawful assembly” may be charged with rioting under the law.
When there is an immediate threat of disturbance or something that could potentially cause trouble or damage to property or human life, Section 144 is enforced. Public meetings are generally forbidden by Section 144 of the CrPC.
Four or more individuals cannot congregate in the affected area as per Section 144, and during the curfew, residents are advised to remain indoors for a specified amount of time. Additionally, the government completely restricts traffic. The curfew keeps markets, schools, colleges, and offices closed; only necessary services are permitted to operate with advance notification.
