Just days before the commencement of the Indian Premier League (IPL), tragedy struck in Karnataka’s Chitradurga district as a 24-year-old woman, Ranjitha V, took her own life. Reports suggest that Ranjitha allegedly ended her life due to the overwhelming debts of her husband, totaling Rs. 1.5 crore, stemming from IPL betting.
Her husband, Darshan Babu, was employed as an assistant engineer in Karnataka’s irrigation department in Hosadurga, Chitradurga. He was reportedly burdened by this staggering debt incurred through gambling.
Police reports revealed that Ranjitha was battling depression, compounded by relentless harassment from creditors. The couple faced constant threats and intimidation from moneylenders demanding repayment of their dues.
Who Was Threatening The Couple?
Ranjitha’s father lodged a police complaint, naming 13 individuals whom he claimed had extended loans. In his complaint, Venkatesh, Ranjitha’s father, asserted that Ranjitha took her own life due to the harassment inflicted by those individuals who had lent money to her husband, Darshan.
People used to threaten the couple, come near the house, and fight with them. All this increased the stress level for Ranjitha and that led her to end her life. A case, however, was filed as per her father’s complaint, said the police official.
Chitradurga superintendent of police, Dharmendra Kumar Meena stated that while Darshan was taking money from the people, for surety he was giving people empty cheques. So far, police have arrested 3 of the 13 accused, while others are still at large.
How Much Money Was Taken by Darshan Babu?
During our investigation, we discovered that Darshan Balu borrowed 84 lakh rupees from moneylenders. This substantial sum was acquired between 2021 and 2023, coinciding with the IPL season. We have filed a case against 13 individuals and have arrested three of them, Meena stated.
According to a report from the Times of India, Darshan has managed to repay a significant portion of the Rs 1.5 crore loss he incurred. Nevertheless, he still owes Rs 54 lakh.
Her husband and a 2-year-old son survived 24-year-old Ranjitha.
