Another case of a fake video has shaken the internet. This time, the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, has fallen victim to this trend. As per a report by the BBC, Giorgia Meloni has sought compensation of 100,000 euros after some deepfake videos of her were uploaded online.
Yet another instance of a fake video has sent ripples through the internet, this time ensnaring Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni. According to a BBC report, Meloni has pursued compensation of 100,000 euros for several deepfake videos that surfaced online.
Authorities managed to track down the suspects by tracing the mobile device used to upload the videos. These videos were reportedly uploaded to an adult website based in the US, purportedly predating Meloni’s assumption of office as Prime Minister in 2022.
Representing Giorgia Meloni, lawyer Maria Giulia Marongiu described the compensation sought by the Prime Minister as symbolic. She further mentioned that, if granted, Meloni intends to donate the sum to a fund supporting women who have fallen victim to male violence.
Meloni is set to testify in a court in Sassari on July 2. As per the BBC report, a 40-year-old individual, believed to be the mastermind behind the videos, along with his 73-year-old father, are presently under investigation. Allegedly, they digitally replaced Meloni’s face with that of an adult film actor in the fabricated video content.
Nonetheless, this incident marks just one of many instances where the web of fake deception has ensnared prominent figures. Recently, a slew of fake videos depicting Bollywood luminaries such as Rashmika Mandanna, Katrina Kaif, Nora Fatehi, and others surfaced on various social media platforms.
In November 2023, a fake video featuring Rashmika Mandanna garnered widespread attention across social media channels. The video showcased the visage of British-Indian influencer Zara Patel, clad in a black top, seamlessly replaced with that of the Bollywood star.
Subsequently, in January, Delhi Police apprehended a B-Tech graduate from Andhra Pradesh believed to be the video’s creator.
