A shocking case came to light as a man named, Robert Duboise of Florida who served 37 years in prison in charge of murder and rape proved innocent. The man Robert Duboise will now receive compensation of $14 million from the Government.
Recently it was finally decided that the Tampa city government will provide a compensation of a total of $14 million to the victim, Robert Duboise. In 1983, 18-year-old, Robert was arrested on charges of rape and murder of 19-year-old Barbara Grams, and a death sentence was announced to him which was then reduced to life imprisonment.
What happened with Robert Duboise?
In August 1983, an 18-year-old boy, Robert Duboise of Florida was arrested on a charge of killing a 19-year-old girl, Barbara Grams. On 19 August 1983, a young girl named, Barbara was going back home from her job at a Tampa restaurant when she was sexually assaulted and was hanged to death.
After the medical tests, it was found that there was a wound on her cheeks which was a bite mark. After the Police investigation and medical tests, it was claimed that Robert DuBoise was behind the actions. Despite being innocent, Duboise was convicted of the three-degree murder and sexual battery. Robert was pronounced a death sentence which was later reduced to life imprisonment.
After a very long time, in 2020 it was proved that Robert Duboise was not behind the murder of the girl. In August 2020, Robert was freed from prison after DNA evidence was presented in court. It was then proved that not Robert but some other two men killed the girl. After Doboise was released he filed a case against the Florida city Police and now on Thursday, 15 February 2024, the city council announced a compensation of $ 14 million.
Is $ 14 million justified?
An innocent man, Robert Doboise who has spent 37 years in prison for a crime he never committed is wrong. Robert Duboise was arrested at the age of 18 and now after 37 years he is released from jail and is 55 years old now. As the government is now offering $ 14 million to compensate, the question is raised, Is $ 14 million justified for 37 years of imprisonment?
Robert Duboise has himself answered the question and has said that it meant to him it’s finally over and he’s glad that he doesn’t have to spend any more years of his life pursuing this. He further said that money, houses, cars, none of the stuff can ever restore what he has lost as he doesn’t feel bitter about anything and he doesn’t want to waste his time with betterment and pity parties.
It was reported by Florida City officials that Robert Duboise will receive $ 14 million in three installments, $ 9 million this year, $ 3 million in 2025, and $ 2 million in 2026 as they hope that the amount provided to him will give him a measure of comfort.
